Linen Backing and Restoration

Vintage Poster Restoration is a process which allows posters to be stabilised and displayed in an acid-free archival manner. Originally pasted onto fences, walls and boards vintage posters have found their way into private collections, libraries, museums and galleries. Linen backing is accepted as the industry standard for poster preservation of an item that would have been otherwise torn down, pasted over or destroyed.

Linen backing is an archival process where the poster is mounted with wheat paste onto acid free paper, which has been adhered to canvas. This process provides stability to the piece. Lined posters may be rolled, are ready for framing, and are easier to handle in all aspects.

In terms of restoration, as a general rule, "less is best". There has always been a great debate between restoration and conservation. Please discuss the balance that you wish to receive with the studio.

Here at Studio M all restoration work completed is fully reversible. If you are looking for a poster in perfect condition then consider purchasing a reproduction print, rather than trying to recreate the genuine article through restoration.

It is best to remember that there is no such thing as a perfect poster. The beautiful thing about these pieces is that they have history and it is attractive to let this shine through.

The purpose of linen backing your vintage poster is to strengthen and preserve it. For this reason we only use materials that are acid free and methods that are reversible. Please ask for more information on the level of restoration that would best suit your poster.
