Latest Trends in the Home StudyMetricon General Manager – Marketing, Darren Mehl, comments on the latest trends in the home study/office.

How has the study changed over the years?

Home offices have become more popular as people take advantage of current technology and home based businesses. Including this room allows you to create a healthy balance between work life and spending time with children and saves you the overheads of renting office space.

At Metricon, many of our home designs include an area for a home office/study that can serve as multi-purpose room - private space for both parents and children who can use it while working, studying or relaxing.

It can be designed to look as much or as little as a workplace office with some extra chairs for visiting clients and if it’s a study area, it may have a couch or some armchairs for those times when you want to relax, away from the computer.

As homes have become larger, so too have the sizes of these rooms and they are now more accessible, flowing freely into the floorplan rather than being tucked away.

How has their position within the home changed?

They are now more accessible, flowing more freely into the design of the floorplan rather than being tucked away.

We have designed the home office/study in our homes to be in a separate area of the home to the entertaining areas, where all the action takes place. This allows mum and dad to have an area where they can work quietly or the kids can do their homework without any interruption or noise from the TV, guests or family members.

What new concepts have become incorporated into home studies?

Inbuilt cabinetry that comprises wall-mounted bookshelves has been included in a home office/study to neatly store reference materials or books.

“With a growing need to incorporate technology into the home, the home office/study has been designed to incorporate smart wiring for home networking and cable TV. Home networking is a big trend, allowing families to share or access the internet, phone, video and TV throughout the home.

Inbuilt cabinetry is another extra that appears in the home/office study. It allows for neat storage and blends in with the colours and finishes that may have been incorporated into other areas of the home. Some of our customers have included robes so that this room can be converted at a later date into a bedroom if need be.

Why do you think they are a valuable addition within the home?

This is a fabulous room to include in the home as it can be used for a number of purposes, whether it is a library or sitting room where you spend time reading a book, relaxing with family or entertaining with friends.”

While some home buyers may not require shared access or multiple phone lines right now, including home networking at the outset will allow for neater cabling and huge savings. “It’s no longer just a functional room but an area that boasts a contemporary design, making a statement. This is particularly important if it’s being used as a home office and you want to create an impression on business associates. “This space includes more windows to provide plenty of natural light into the home and strong lighting to create a different, more relaxed mood. What kind of extras are available to add to the study in your homes? With a growing need to incorporate technology into the home, people are opting to include smart wiring for home networking and cable TV. Home networking is a big trend, allowing families to share or access the internet, phone, video and TV throughout the home.
