Just because the study is the perfect room to store receipts, tax returns, invitations and junk mail, doesn’t mean you can’t be creative and smart with your space. It is easy to let the letters pile up and before you know it, your tranquil get away room is a room you would prefer to get away from!
A study is a room for peace and quiet - for you to lounge in your favourite chair underneath your favourite lamp and read a good novel. Or get down to business and balance your books. It is also a place of calm where any family member can escape the hub of activity and noise that runs throughout the rest of the home.
That’s why it is so important to design the study with colours that ooze serenity and doesn’t scream busy. As they say – a cluttered space is a cluttered mind and it all comes down to storage space.
The most important piece of furniture is your desk. It is vital that you understand how much space you have before you buy that beautiful heavy oak desk that looks perfect in the store room but once your bring it home, appears huge and bulky.
Don’t be afraid to break some rules. There is no need to push a desk towards the back wall. Bring it to the centre of the room fitted neatly against one side of the wall. This will balance even the smallest areas and will open up the space to the rear of the room. This may allow you to add a filing cabinet in the back corner.
Draws are a necessity! Make sure they are big enough to comfortably fit your belongings but not so big that storing means never find any of it again. It is important to allocate space to store your things in. Take advantage of the abundance of stationary shops that continue to pop up. Folders can be creative and fun and can add to your overall theme.
Fit separate shelves straight to your wall. This gives you the freedom to add as many or as little as you like. It will also help uplift the room and helps maintain that spacious feeling. Lugging in that old book shelf with the heavy base will eat up space unnecessarily.
Choose a lamp that fits into your wall rather than one that stand on the floor. This will give you more space for a cosy chair to snuggle up on when balancing books looks way to daunting.
