Choosing the type of surface for your kitchen, bathroom, laundry, floors and walls is a big decision as there are so many considerations. The biggest factor is obviously your budget – as these items can be pricey.
First consideration is the type of work these will be enduring. They have to be hard-wearing within the kitchen but also need to look good. Much of the cost is determined by how large the surface area is or if the surface continues up to become a splashback. This trend is really taking off and looks fabulous!
Below are some pros and cons of the most popular surface types.
Laminate
There are plenty of new innovations in the world of laminate. The one I like most is the laminate stone. There are some real benefits to using laminate – the first being it is very affordable. There is a magnitude of options in styles and colours, laminate is easy to install and is extremely durable and strong.
However laminate will not withstand hot pots and you will need to be selective with the cleaning agents you use.
CeasarStone
What is it? CeasarStone is 93 per cent quartz combined with resins and polymers, which are vacuumed into a hard-wearing beautiful surface – for as any kitchen, laundry or bathroom benchtop.
Caesarstone is not only stain and scratch resistance – a huge plus if you have kids – but is easy to maintain and provides a hygienic food preparation area. The downside is Caesarstone can be expensive.
Granite
This is the hard stone option – the real deal. Granite is the hardest benchtop material and therefore is difficult to scratch. Hot pots are no match for granite, which is available in an array of colours. Keep in mind granite is not cheap and will need to be re-sealed over time.
I have only touched the tip of the iceberg here. There are many other options to consider- glass, tiles, marble – the list is endless. Just be aware the surface you select must be able to handle whatever you decide to dish up – sharp knives, banging pots, abrasive solvents or even little hands smashing cutlery on them. My advice – choose something simple, lasting and one that fits your lifestyle.
