Melissa, Metricon’s Display Decor Manager, says that contemporary homes today are designed with zoned living, catering to the modern, Australian family.
“At Metricon, many of our single-storey and double-storey homes include a private retreat for mum and dad and designated space for the children. It’s all about having your own space within the home,” offers Melissa.
According to Melissa, there are some key design elements to keep in mind to develop a “kid’s retreat” in your home.
Position
If you have a single-storey home, try to design it so the children’s bedrooms are together on one side of the home and place the parents’ retreat at the opposite end of the home. In double-storey homes, include a parents’ retreat on the ground floor and a children’s retreat upstairs. This caters to the entire family - providing everybody in the home with some privacy and space to relax or entertain.
Bathroom
Include a bathroom and separate toilet in close proximity to all of the children’s bedrooms so that it is easily accessible.
Leisure Room
In our double-storey homes, we have designed the second floor to include the children’s bedrooms and a spacious leisure room where the children can play, study or entertain whilst mum and dad have guests downstairs.
Rumpus
A rumpus room can serve as a games room or home theatre where the kids can watch the latest movies or TV programs with friends. Design the room with bright colours and plenty of comfortable and colourful furniture for both relaxation and playing.
Study
Incorporate a study into your home so that children have a private area that they can use away from the rest of the family, even if it’s just to read a book. Including doors on the study is a good way to avoid noise interference and if there is a mess, it is confined to that room.
Integrated living for all of the family.
