Metricon’s Display Decor Manager, Melissa, says that the trend in contemporary Australian homes is to include an ensuite and a bathroom that cater specifically to parents and children.
“At Metricon, many of our single-storey and double-storey range of homes include a private retreat with ensuite for mum and dad and a bathroom which is easily accessible for the kids to share,” said Melissa.
According to Melissa, there are some key design elements to implement when creating an ensuite/bathroom in your home.
Tiling
Try to design the ensuite and kids’ bathroom with a neutral base and add some splashes of colour, either in bathroom accessories, feature wall tiling, bath/spa hob tiling or as window treatments. Warm tones such as mocha and chocolate are also being widely used in many of our ensuites.
Vanities
Double vanities are still very popular in ensuites as it allows mum and dad to have their own space. In kids’ bathrooms, the trend is to feature a single vanity that can be shared.
Round bowl basins are still quite popular but square basins (inset or semi-recessed) are sought after for a more contemporary/modern feel.
You might like to incorporate twin mirrors above your vanities (with a tiled surround) or one large mirror above the entire length of the vanity.
Spas and Baths
We have designed many of our ensuites with spas which are wonderful for relaxation at the end of a hard day or on a cold winter’s night. Some of our customers are conscious of water consumption and are opting for a bath instead of a spa, or just a shower.
For the kids bathrooms, include a bath so that you can easily wash the young ones and older kids can also enjoy a relaxing bath at the end of a hard day at school.
Showers
If you have a large space in your ensuite you might look at incorporating a second shower rose, or shower hoses on slide rails. The hose makes it easy for cleaning a larger shower and the slide rails enable it to be adjusted for people of any height; you simply slide the shower head up and down the rail.
Window coverings
The days of not being able to look out of our bathroom/ensuite windows are gone. Some people are opting for clear glazing in their ensuites and, in their garden landscaping, are including a pleasant view with greenery, lighting and possibly a water feature.
Timber venetians and timber shutters are very popular for dressing windows in bathrooms, ensuites and toilets. Be wary of using some blinds and fabrics because they can easily become affected by moisture and cream.
